God
God is really undefinable with a few simple words.
The Christian God, the God of the Bible, consists of three supreme entities.
- Father God
- Jesus Christ, the Son of God
- The Holy Spirit, the companion of man through God.
These three supreme entities are known as the Trinity.

Jehovah (also spelled Yahweh)
is God’s covenant name
it carries profound meaning about His character and nature.
When we praise God by His names, we begin to know our Savior more deeply and see His work in our lives.
As Scripture says, “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that confess His name”
(Hebrews 13:15)
The Core Meaning
Jehovah means “the self-existent one” or “I am who I am”.
The name literally means “to be”
it speaks of God’s self-existence, self-sufficiency, and supreme sovereignty.
Our God depends on nothing and no one outside of Himself for His existence.
He is the ever-living God who always is.
Why it Matters
In biblical times, a name was far more than just a label — it expressed a person’s inward identity, reputation, and character. When God reveals Himself as Jehovah, He is revealing His very identity. This is the name God revealed to Moses at the burning bush when Moses asked whom to say had sent him (Exodus 3:14).
Jehovah appears more than 6,800 times in the Bible, making it God’s most frequently used name.
It is the covenant name — God loves to make covenants, keeps covenants, and honors them.
The Compound Names of Jehovah
God also reveals Himself through compound names that show different facets of His character:
- Jehovah Jireh —
“The Lord provides” - Jehovah Raah –
“The Lord my Shepherd” - Jehovah Rapha —
“The Lord heals” - Jehovah Nissi —
“The Lord our banner” - Jehovah Shalom —
“The Lord our peace” - Jehovah Shammah –
“The Lord is there” - Jehovah Tsidkenu –
“The Lord our Righteousness” - Jehovah Mekoddishkem –
“The Lord who sanctifies you” - Jehovah Shalom –
“The Lord is Peace” - Jehovah Sabaoth –
“The Lord of Host”
How is our Lord distinguished from all the other gods worshipped throughout the world?
Of course, we know our God is above all others, set apart in every way; but one clear way we know the Lord to be distinguished from others is by His name:
the God who pardons.
Scripture reveals our Lord as the God who forgives, the only God Who has the power to pardon sin.
We see this name of God confirmed throughout the scriptures.
Nehemiah declared,
“But you are God, ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abundant in kindness, and did not forsake them”
(Nehemiah 9:17).David gives us the same Hebrew description of God when he wrote,
“For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You”
(Psalm 86:5).
