Let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.
1 Thessalonians 5:8
The Bible is our best commentary on today’s news, and biblical prophecy is unfolding in the headlines. The nation of Israel is once again situated in its ancient land and encircled by enemies. To the West, Hamas dominates the Gaza Strip and wants to destroy Israel. To the South, the Muslim Brotherhood and other jihadist groups in North Africa want to do the same. To the North, Hezbollah has 100,000 missiles aimed at Israel from Lebanon; and further north there’s ferment in Turkey, Ukraine, and Russia. To the east, there’s Iraq, Iran, and ISIS, all dedicated to the violent obliteration of Israel.
First Thessalonians 5 says: “You yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes like a thief… But we are not of the night nor of darkness… Let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.”
The closer we come to the Day of the Lord, the more urgently we need to armor up. Make sure you’re trusting God, proudly wear the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet of hope.
This is no time for spiritual lethargy! Put on the breastplate of faith and love to protect your desires and affections, and the helmet of salvation to protect your thoughts.
